Here at Alqueva,
opportunities are fresh

Production potential

The Alqueva region offers one of the greatest, if the not the actual greatest
roduction potential in Portugal. The development driven by Alqueva gives
great impetus to Alentejo, starting from an almost virgin position where irrigation
farming is concerned, and which will impact on domestic agricultural production
in the medium and long-term. It brings unique opportunities to the region
in the agricultural and agro-industry sectors, magnified by the scale
of the Project – 120,000 hectares.
The space, the quality of soil and climate make a decisive contribution.
In this region of southern Portugal, characterised by a Mediterranean climate,
the average annual temperature is 17°C, recording an annual average
of 3,000 hours of sunshine. The average rainfall is 572 mm per year,
unevenly distributed throughout the year.
The low annual rainfall and its irregularity are overcome by the guaranteed
water provided by Alqueva.
