Here at Alqueva,
opportunities are fresh

Global Irrigation System

The multi-purpose Alqueva development, located in Alentejo, southern
Portugal, is primarily an agricultural project. The Global Irrigation System
is centred on Alqueva dam, the largest strategic water reserve in Europe,
with a catchmen area of approximately 10,000 km2, divided between
the districts of Beja, Évora, Portalegre and Setúbal, and covering a total
of 20 municipalities.
This System interconnects dams and ensures water availability, even during
periods of extreme drought. The Alqueva Global Irrigation System is composed
of 69 dams, reservoirs and weirs, 382 km of primary network that connects
the dams of the System, 1 620 km of secondary network pipelines to take
the water to the farmers’ plots, 47 pumping stations, 6 mini hydroelectric
stations and one photovoltaic power station.
It consists of 120,000 hectares of irrigated land in a region where soils are very
suitable for irrigation farming, the number of sunshine hours is above
the European average and the climate is mild. A combination of variables
that give the region unique competitive advantages. Alqueva is the new
paradigm of modern agriculture in Portugal. The conditions are unique
and with proven competitiveness. The factors that make Alqueva different
from other projects, even at the European level, are the space, scale
of the project, guaranteed water, climate and management in close proximity
with farmers.
