Here at Alqueva,
opportunities are fresh

Nearly 20,000 hectares of the irrigated zone of Alqueva are smallholdings.
The development of irrigation farming among smallholders presents greater
difficulties, so EDIA has organised initiatives to create the conditions
for the increased participation of farmers. The initiatives developed
and to be developed are conducted in partnership with local structures
and are specific to each situation. EDIA has developed and is developing
land parcelling schemes, especially in areas of Moura and Brinches.
The usual procedures for parcelling processes are not being followed
in the latter situation, as the aim is to conduct the process in a faster, simpler
and more natural manner, with the prior agreement of the beneficiaries.
EDIA is also using demonstration units to promote irrigation crop systems
in smallholdings, in order to transmit know-how to farmers on the production
and marketing of their products. An example of this is the "Alqueva Vegetables
Academy", which is located on a farm at Beringel, and also the "Medicinal
and Aromatic Plants Academy", on a farm near Messejana. EDIA is also
available, whenever required, to seek out joint solutions for the development
of irrigation on smallholdings.
